Woman with Down Syndrome Challenges ‘Deeply Offensive’ UK Abortion Law

Nicola Enoch told the BBC that when she was pregnant with her son, Tom, she almost got an amniocentesis, which (among other things) tests amniotic fluid for Down syndrome. Enoch refused the procedure because it increases the risk of miscarriage. She said that if she had learned at that point that her son had Down syndrome, she probably would have aborted him.

Now, Enoch is thankful that she has learned to love her son, despite the challenges of his condition. Her journey has led her to found the support group The Ups of Downs, as well as the group Positive about Down syndrome. She said, “I was led to believe he would have a negative impact on our lives but he has enriched them and we are without doubt better people for having him in them.”

Paul Conrathe, who represents Crowter and Lea-Wilson, said the trial will likely take place “early next year” and believes the willingness of the court to hear the case is a “hugely significant moment.” Heidi Crowter said she feels “amazing” at knowing their case was accepted and told supporters, “We are so very grateful to all of you who have made this possible, we couldn’t have done it without you!”
