‘Words Fail Me’—Progressive Christian Author Jen Hatmaker Expresses Shock, Fear at Roe’s Reversal

Hatmaker believes the reversal of Roe threatens gay marriage, birth control, racial civil rights and fair voting policies. “Removing federal protections for civil liberties and reverting those decisions to individual states means tens of millions of people are immediately in peril and will remain so based on where they live.”

She continues, “Today is overwhelming and scary, and I don’t know what to say right now. I don’t have the words. But every single generation in American history has had to fight for civil rights… we do what every generation before us has done: organize, use our voices, call our representatives, and above all else, we vote like our kids’ futures depend on it because they do.”

Roe’s Reversal and Fear

In a special interview with Karen Swallow Prior on the Stetzer ChurchLeaders Podcast, host Ed Stetzer observed that a lot of people are reacting to Roe’s reversal with fear and asked Prior how pro-life advocates can address that fear while still advocating for unborn children.

Prior agreed with this assessment and said that while there are people who celebrate their abortions, the majority of people tend see to abortion as “an unfortunate kind of circumstance.” It is crucial, therefore, that believers are motivated by compassion.

“I think we just have to embody what we say we believe,” said Prior, “which is not about oppressing people. It’s not about stripping people from freedom. It’s about a love of human life and a love of human flourishing and a desire to see all human beings live as long as they can, because they do bear the image of God. And if we really believe that, then that will come out in our posture and our words and our attitudes, even in the face of this anger and fear and hostility.”
