‘I’m Not a Religious Person’: Chris Pratt Discusses Faith, Hillsong, and Online Backlash

Regarding the controversy, Pratt clarified, “I never went to Hillsong. I’ve never actually been to Hillsong. I don’t know anyone from that church.”

When asked why he didn’t say that at the time of the controversy, Pratt said, “I’m gonna, like, throw a church under the bus?”

“If it’s like the Westboro Baptist Church, that’s different,” Pratt added.

According to Men’s Health, Pratt attends Zoe Church, which is located in Los Angeles and is pastored by Chad Veach. Nevertheless, Pratt doesn’t attend the church exclusively, as he also attends a Catholic church with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt.

Later in the interview, Pratt described his spiritual journey, which began when he was living out of his van in Maui and working as a server at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. A stranger came up to Pratt outside of a grocery store one evening and told him, “Jesus told me to talk to you.”

Pratt said something fundamentally changed within him after that conversation. A few weeks later, a film director came to the restaurant where he worked and asked Pratt if he was an actor. Before he knew it, Pratt was living in Los Angeles and launching what would become a highly successful acting career.

It was this turn of events that Pratt said solidified his belief in God.

Reflecting on where his career has taken him, Pratt said, “I’ve been broke-broke, dude…And I think early on in my career it was so important to me. It’s like, don’t forget where you came from. Don’t forget who you are. And part of me is struggling with who I am maybe not being who I was.”
