Faithful Yachters Killed By Somali Pirates

Scott and Jean Adam were living their dream of traveling the world meeting people, connecting with churches, and distributing Bibles when they and their crew were suddenly murdered by pirates off the coast of Somalia on Tuesday. The New York Times called it “one of the most violent episodes since the modern-day piracy epidemic began several years ago.” The Adams were traveling with two crew members in a convoy of yachts called a rally when they suddenly veered away from the group for an unknown reason, witnesses say. Friends of the Adams remarked that the two were not typically risk-seekers, but they knew the dangers of sailing in those waters and accepted the risk in order to live the life of adventure they wantedThe Adams’ yacht was specifically designed to travel well when weighed down with hundreds of Bibles. Scott Adam, who held master’s degrees of divinity and of theology, would often preach at churches or teach at Bible colleges in their travels. The NYT said the murders “underscore how lawless the seas have become in that part of the world…just about every week another ship gets hijacked, according to Ecoterra International, a nonprofit maritime group that monitors pirate attacks.”
