Lecrae’s ‘Apple Juice’ Tweet Sparks Debate About Communion at Home

People opposed to such substitutions tweet that they’re merely a “snack,” not holy communion. One person comments, “I paid my rent with Monopoly money. It counts cause I did it.” Another writes, “This is a mockery of Christ and a mockery of His words.”

On Monday, Lecrae responded that he had “learned a lot” and “didn’t realize it was such a touchy subject.” The Grammy Award-winning rapper also expressed thanks “for grace” and “for the dialogue.”

Lecrae shared a link to an article he says has “resonated” with him. Titled “Have You Taken Communion the Jewish Way, as Yeshua Taught?” it examines the traditional Jewish Passover, or Seder. Last spring, Lecrae described participating in a Seder meal, calling it a “powerful” experience. “I look forward to celebrating in Jerusalem in the future and more importantly in the New Jerusalem forever,” he said last March.
