Former ‘Full House’ Star Dave Coulier on Grief, Alcoholism, and Faith: Love Is ‘The Only Thing’ That Can Bring Us Together

“Because he was really the funniest person I ever knew. And we used to make each other laugh when we were little kids, when we were laying in our bunk beds doing impressions of our aunts and uncles and our neighbors and coaches and stuff,” Coulier continued. “And my dad would run in at 1 a.m. in the morning and go, ‘I’m tired of hearing Uncle Vince and Mister Hooper in here. Knock it off, both of you.’”

“So whenever that well feels like it’s drying up, I have all of these wonderful moments of laughter, and, you know, amazing life experience with [my brother] that I just pour into the well,” Coulier said. “And I draw from that, and that works for me.”

“You know, one of the things about becoming sober is that people always say, ‘Do you have advice?’ I don’t,” Coulier went on to say. “I really don’t, because we’re all on our own journey; some journeys are more painful than others.”

“But what I think is that if someone can see themselves in me—because I’m really simple,” Coulier expressed. “And so if someone can see themselves in me, and I can help someone, that really brings it full circle for me. It really makes me feel great when someone says, ‘You know what? When you were talking about your experience, that really helped me. That really gave me a boost, because if you can do it, maybe I can do it. And that’s really the best I can hope for.”

When asked to give words of encouragement to those struggling to maintain their sobriety, Coulier said, “Don’t forget to laugh. Laughter is such an amazing gift. It can heal you. It can give you perspective.”

“You know, we’re having such a tough time in our world right now. People are really at war with each other over a lot of things, and we all know what those things are. And we need to get back to the United States of America. That word ‘united’ is really important,” Coulier went on to express. “We’re not united right now, and we need to bring ourselves together, and the only thing that is really going to bring us together is the word ‘love.’ And if you go back to ‘Full House,’ you’ll see a lot of love.”

“It’s a real simple thing, and it’s a good life lesson for us all to just think about that word ‘love’ before you start to really go after somebody because maybe they don’t agree with you. United—it’s a real important [word], and the only way we do that is with love,” Coulier said.
