Poverty Increasing, Incomes Decreasing in U.S.

According to new Census Bureau statistics, in 2010 America’s rate of poverty increased to its highest level since the early 80s and median incomes dropped to the lowest level since 1995. More than 46 million people lived below the poverty level in 2010 (about $22,300 per year for a family of four 11,100 for an individual); this calculates to about 15 percent of the nation, or one in six of us. A report from The Christian Post suggested that the continuing high jobless rate may be contributing to even more people falling below the poverty level in 2011.

Other troubling statistics: Household incomes have fallen over six percent since the recession began in 2007. Over six million Americans have been unemployed for more than six months, and nearly 50 million are without health insurance.
