7 Qualities of Successful Entrepreneurs

It doesn’t matter whether you’re starting a company, organization, or campaign. Any entrepreneurial endeavor appears to rise and fall on some common qualities in the person(s) driving the passion. I’ve had the privilege of seeing up close and working with a few hundred entrepreneurs these past few years. As an entrepreneur myself who comes from a family of serial entrepreneurs, I have begun to recognize specific qualities that most who seek new endeavors possess that allow them to be successful.

The following is an abbreviated list of some of these qualities:

  • Intuition Over Market Research – This is not to say that successful entrepreneurs don’t do market research as they enter a vocational space. Rather, when push comes to shove, successful entrepreneurs often side with their intuition even when the market tells them otherwise. They would rather risk more if it means that they could live without the regret of not having tried.
  • Confidence to Adapt – Most entrepreneurs will be the first to admit that they don’t have all of their strategy laid out in a business school kind of way. They do have clear vision written down and a great sense of direction, but most (i.e., over 50%) don’t necessarily have an exhaustive business plan. Nevertheless, they have confidence in themselves to adapt and problem solve anything that comes their way. Their trust in their abilities is often more reliable than a traditional plan.
  • Undeniable Work Ethic – Entrepreneurs are some of the hardest working people I know. Most that I’ve worked with have “Achiever” as one of their main strengths. Achiever is someone who tirelessly works to accomplish a goal. Yes, entrepreneurs are generally work-a-holics and don’t mind sacrificing momentary pleasure for an ultimate goal. They love what they do and don’t view their pursuits as simply financial. There’s usually a deeper reason for their drive than just money. Financial success is often the by-product of their pursuits and not necessarily (like common belief) their goal.
  • Humility to Learn – Entrepreneurs are like giant sponges. They want to learn from everyone about most everything. They recognize that they don’t have all the answers and are willing to put themselves in the posture of learner. This is why most successful entrepreneurs are well read.
  • Collaboration as Need – Most entrepreneurs don’t think collaboration is just a nice option. They know and openly admit that they need help and a strong network of people to work with. If you’re genuine, they will work with you.
  • Eternal Optimism – Most entrepreneurs see the cup half full and expect more water to come in.
  • Tired but Happy – Nothing can replace the joy of pursuing your passion or dream. Entrepreneurs should remind us of what it means to live for what we believe in.
