Is Marriage Really Dying?

The new issue of Maxim magazine contains an interview with actress Cameron Diaz in which she calls marriage an “old tradition that doesn’t suit our world any longer.” In a related commentary with FOX News, psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow agreed: “Marriage is a source of real suffering for the vast majority of married people,” he said, suggesting that the end of marriage as an institution is coming quickly. The Christian Post spoke to Rev. Mike and Trisha Fox of Marriage for Today, who admitted that marriages are prone to failure in our society, regardless of the “outrageous” claims made by Ablow and Diaz. The Foxes said the comments “bring up some very, very fundamental flaws in the way we, as Christians, view marriage” and could be viewed as a “wake-up call.” They encourage Christians to ask themselves, “Why is our marriage dying? Why are there so many divorces in our ranks? Why is it…that our marriages are not a source of happiness, relief, solace and joy but of stress and torn lives? God often uses counterparts to us to keep us in check…if anyone on Earth should have a loving, happy, fulfilling marraige, it should be God’s people.”
