Bus Crash in Indiana Kills Youth Pastor, Pregnant Wife

Sad report: A bus heading home to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan overturned this past weekend, killing three people and injuring at least nineteen with nine hospitalized and one in critical condition. Among those killed were a youth pastor and his wife, Chad and Courtney Phelps, who were expecting their second child next month. Also killed was a female chaperone, Tonya Weindorf, a mother of five.

CNN.com reported that the bus was full of youth-group students from Colonial Hills Baptist in Indianapolis. The driver said that failing brakes were at fault; authorities reported that the bus was the only vehicle involved.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard visited the church after the crash, who remarked that the scene was “remarkably positive, very sad, but at the same time very together.”

“Some of the teenagers are hurting very badly. You can see it in their faces,” remarked Mayor Ballard. “It’s very clear that they are being guided by their faith right now.”
