How to Follow Through on Your Commitments

I’m a big Will Ferrell fan. His movies and tweets are some of the best comedy of our day. But every once in a while, Will provides light-hearted insights into some of the mistakes we make as humans.

Here is a quote Will tweeted a few weeks ago that illustrates what I’m talking about:

“When I say, ‘I’ll think about it,’ I really mean: ‘I’ll forget about it completely until you bring it up again.'” – Will Ferrell

The reason Will’s tweet was so funny was because it is so true.

How often are we guilty of telling someone we’ll thinking about it only to never think about it again? Maybe you’ve been guilty of telling someone “I’ll be praying for you” and forget about it the next second.

If you really want to impress someone, don’t fall into the trap of forgetting about it. Instead, be intentional about following through with what you said you were going to do.

Let’s say someone comes up to you after church on Sunday and asks you to pray for them. You have three options:

You can tell them “no,” you won’t pray for them.

You can tell them you will pray for them and then forget about it.

You can tell them you will, actually pray for them, and then a couple of weeks later, ask them how the situation is going.

What would you want someone to do for you?

The key is having a personal reminder system in place to record your commitment and remind you to follow up.

People remember that you remembered. I can promise you that. They’ll also remember if you don’t remember.

Don’t be that person who talks a good game and then drops the ball when it comes to follow through.

What system do you have in place to follow up and follow through?
