5 “Zipper Down” Mistakes Inexperienced Speakers Make

5. Bite off more than we can chew.

A few years ago, I heard a sermon by a relatively new speaker on evolution versus creation. He had read a book on the topic and he wanted to share his new-found knowledge with the congregation.

Unfortunately, by the time he finished, most of his audience was pretty squarely in the Darwin camp.

His topic was too challenging and he was too green to take it on.

A rule of thumb a mentor gave me was, never set up a question you can’t answer. Subjects like eschatology, predestination and angels having sex with humans are important and fascinating, but better left to veterans.
