How to Set Goals?

by Mario Vega

The goals should not be written in stone. They should be written in paper and with a pencil. And the pastor should have an eraser in his hand. Why? Often a pastor has to adjust the goals according to unexpected circumstances.

I’ve noticed that a small church can set higher goals than a larger church. Why? Because if a church has two cells and opens one more in a year, it will have reached a 50% growth rate in that year. But if the church has 500 cells, it is highly unlikely that in one year it will open 250 new cells (the equivalence of a 50% growth rate). This is why when a church starts its cell work it can establish more aggressive goals. But as the cells begin to multiply, it will have to adjust its goals in a more conservative way.

Another factor is whether the church has to make a transition to become a cell church. When a church makes a transition, it can normally count on mature Christians who the church can train to be new cell leaders. This increases the ability of the church to multiply new cells. A church plant can’t count on mature Christians but normally has to first find converts, which takes more time to multiply cell groups.

Finally, when setting the goals, do not worry about copying a goal from another church. The important thing is to have a goal, whatever that is. Having a goal increases the possibilities that your leaders will actually reach it. Just adjust that goal according to your paticular circumstances.
