At least six people have been confirmed killed and over 30 others were injured after a gunman opened fire on the suburban Chicago area of Highland Park during their Independence Day parade

The Rev. Dr. Charlie Dates will take over for Rev. James Meeks, founder and longtime senior pastor of Salem Baptist Church. In his June 19 sermon, Meeks told congregants he is retiring as of January 15, 2023.

The pastor's daughter said, “This is not a dream, this is not a movie, this is not an episode of a crime show...My parents’ hearts are so big. My parents’ love is overflowing. We don’t know why this happened.”
