Concerns to Consider Carefully

While AI offers convenience, it also raises spiritual and ethical concerns. Here are a few reasons to move forward with discernment:

  1. Loss of Personal Touch
AI can never replace a real person’s voice, compassion, or discernment. Churches must ensure that they do not outsource true pastoral care to software. Even an efficient chatbot cannot pray with someone who is grieving.

  2. Theology and Accuracy
AI tools draw from vast data sources, some of which may not align with sound doctrine. Any content generated by AI—especially teaching or theological material—should be carefully reviewed by church leaders.

  3. Privacy and Security
Many AI tools operate through cloud services that collect data. Churches must be cautious about what information is shared, especially when it comes to prayer requests, counseling notes, or member details.

  4. Dependence on Technology
As with any tool, there’s a risk of becoming overly reliant on AI. Ministry is relational and Spirit-driven. If technology becomes the center, the church risks losing its focus on Christ and community.

Guidelines for Using AI in the Church

If your church is exploring AI tools as a part of its church technology tools, consider these simple guidelines to ensure they serve your mission rather than distract from it:

  • Start small and evaluate often – Begin with one use case, such as automating reminders for small group meetings. Monitor how it impacts both effectiveness and relationships.

  • Keep people at the center – Use AI to support ministry, not replace human contact. Let tech handle tasks so people can focus on people.

  • Ensure pastoral oversight – Anything generated by AI—whether a sermon prompt or a prayer response—should go through a real human filter who knows the theology, tone, and heart of your church.

  • Pray for wisdom – James 1:5 reminds us that God gives wisdom to those who ask. As with any church decision, seek the Lord’s guidance before implementing new tools.

Tools, Not Substitutes

Church technology tools, including AI, are just that—tools. When used thoughtfully, they can enhance the church’s mission, support leaders, and help reach more people with the gospel. But they must never replace Spirit-led leadership, genuine relationships, or the sacred calling of ministry. The local church is still built on Christ, not code. If your church chooses to adopt AI tools, do so with care, prayer, and a clear understanding that the heart of ministry will always be human.
