“My daughter told the Santa at Bass Pro that she wanted Jesus for Christmas and then came to us in January and asked why she didn’t get Jesus for Christmas. I asked her what she meant, and she explained the Gospel to me, so we prayed together,” shared another. “Three years later, our son also asked for Jesus, unprompted. He also explained the Gospel to us, so we prayed. They were both almost 5 when this happened.”
“I was raised in a Christian home. I do believe I was converted at 8. But there was obviously a process of growth in understanding and faith that followed,” someone else said. “My daughter is 6. She recently expressed a desire to turn from her sin and trust Jesus. We prayed with her. Will continue to water the seed of faith we believe the Lord has planted in her heart.”

While some who responded expressed certainty when speaking about childhood conversions, others expressed that they have wrestled through how to respond when their young children want to be baptized.
“When my oldest was about 5 he wanted to be baptized. I asked our church about it, and they put him through a little interview and gave it a thumbs up,” one dad shared. “I was very hesitant, because I was baptized at 5, by choice, but as I matured, the meaning of that changed for me. So much so that I was baptized again in my 30’s.”
“So it felt irresponsible to let my 5 year old make such a decision. And also felt wrong to resist it,” the dad went on to say. “I guess I share all this to affirm that your question is important. Because when I asked around at the time, most folks acted like I was crazy to even consider waiting.”
Far from providing a definitive answer, the responses in Perry’s thread opened up a forum to discuss the varied and unique experiences of Christian children and their parents and the different ways God has worked in those homes to bring about faith. As one response read, “That is so different from my own story – I am interested in the responses.”
