‘Imaginary Religion That Worships Abortion’ — Performance Artist Holds Faux Mass Service To Worship ‘Female Autonomy’

While presenting her artwork at the art festival in Bombay Beach, California, a ghost town some 30 miles south of Coachella on the shores of the Salton Sea, DesForges knelt and prayed before the altar, read her erasure poem, and passed around containers resembling offering plates. But instead of asking for donations, DesForges encouraged attendees to take a slip of paper containing a line from the manifesto to meditate on.

“It was truly like, the perfect location, at the perfect time,” DesForges said of the event. “It just felt meant to be.”

Since the Dobbs decision last summer, pro-life advocates have secured a number of legal victories to protect the unborn at the level of state government. However, this has not been the case in California, where DesForges lives.

In November 2022, Californians overwhelmingly voted to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution. California is one of only three states to pass a constitutional amendment protecting abortion access and allows abortion up to the point of fetal viability.
