Mohler’s advice notwithstanding, perhaps now more than in previous generations, young Americans are not taking the expectation that they will become parents as a given.

For example, the subject of DINKs (couples with dual income and no kids) became a matter of public conversation and debate late last year, when a TikTok trend in which married couples spoke about the benefits of not having children sparked criticism. 

Some chastised the consumeristic nature of the videos, as several couples listed extra money and leisure time among the main benefits of remaining childless.

Others, however, pointed out that given that many younger Millennials and members of Gen Z are faced with crippling student debt, skyrocketing housing and childcare costs, and inflation, the thought of also caring for children can become overwhelming.
