“We are also saddened by those members of the community who turned this tragic accident into a race issue,” O’Meara said. “We will continue to pray for both families and hope they both get the positive support they need during this time.”

In addition to being known as an advocate for social and racial justice in the community, Jackson was a chaplain for the Stamford Police Department.
Jackson’s family wants the charges against Lockwood include second degree manslaughter and has filed a motion with the court to that effect.
Darnell Crosland, the family’s attorney, said, “I think that when you look at the evidence as it’s come out based on the state police investigation, it was more than just negligence, and I think misconduct with a motor vehicle sort of leans towards negligence.”
“Recklessness is the crucial element of the offense,” Crosland said. “It means the defendant acted with conscious disregard for a substantial and unjustifiable risk of serious physical injury or death.”
Jackson’s daughter, Erin, expressed that she felt Lockwood’s firing took too long.

“It’s dealing with the travesty of the loss so suddenly, it’s dealing with the adjustment of his absence, and dealing with the loss of what he was to his community,” she said.
