Former SBC Seminary Administrator Dr. Matt Queen Sentenced to 6 Months of House Arrest for Making False Statements to Federal Investigators

Queen was placed on leave from the church following his indictment. He resigned his post at Friendly Avenue Baptist Church roughly a month after pleading guilty.

“While this has been a challenging season, we continue to trust in God’s sovereignty and remain focused on our mission,” the church said at the time. “As we move forward, we encourage our congregation and the wider community to stay focused on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

At Queen’s sentencing hearing on Wednesday (March 5), Judge Lewis A. Kaplan sided with the prosecution’s requested sentence, according to The Tennessean. Queen’s lawyer asked for a sentence that did not include house arrest. 

The maximum penalty for the crime to which Queen pleaded guilty is a sentence of up to five years in prison.

“The defendant insists that his conduct had no ill effect but that too is untrue,” prosecutors said in a letter to Kaplan in February. “The defendant’s repeated lies dragged out the Government’s investigation and distracted resources better spent elsewhere.”
