Christian author and activist Shane Claiborne posted a screenshot of an old social media post in which Pope Leo advocated for ending the death penalty. Claiborne’s post simply said, “Pope Leo XIV. 🔥”

Given the fact that Pope Leo has on occasion weighed in on American political issues, at one point directly contradicting Vice President Vance on immigration policy, some have expressed skepticism about his leadership.

Laura Loomer, internet personality and Trump ally, posted, “The new Pope once retweeted a post about how we need to keep praying for career criminal & drug addict George Floyd.”

“The tweet said, ‘May all hatred, violence and prejudice be eradicated,’” Loomer added. “What prejudice? Is that another way to spell FENTANYL OVERDOSE? MARXIST POPE!”

“This is all a very calculated move, people. IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP!” wrote worship leader and conservative activist Sean Feucht. “They chose a globalist and woke Pope from the West ON PURPOSE to stand up and criticize the leaders of the Free World.”

In another social media post, Feucht wrote, “Follow Jesus. Do not follow a woke, Marxist, globalist and progressive new Pope.”

A number of others entered the conversation to question the papacy itself.

“A new pope has been crowned—but the old lie remains. No priest, no pontiff, no pope can save you,” wrote author and podcaster Virgil Walker. “Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, according to Scripture alone, for the glory of God alone. Flee false shepherds. Run to Christ.”

“Stop saying ‘We have a new Pope.’ There’s no ‘we,’” wrote controversial Pastor Greg Locke. “You may have one but I have a Savior named Jesus.”
