Gateway will continue to hold Saturday services at the church’s main campus in Southlake, Texas.
This announcement comes roughly two weeks after the church announced it would lay off staff in light of “a significant drop in giving levels.”
“Over the last year, tithing has not mirrored attendance, given the ongoing issues related to the Church’s former pastor,” the church elders said in a statement. “We are heartbroken that this will mean difficult transitions for some of the beloved individuals who have faithfully served on staff at Gateway Church.”
The statement didn’t indicate how many people would lose their jobs, but the layoffs are expected to be finalized by the middle of July.
Morris, who is currently in back-and-forth litigation with Gateway Church over retirement and severance compensation, also faces criminal charges in Oklahoma, where his alleged abuse of Cindy Clemishire occurred.
