A man facing a potential death penalty for the Alabama church shooting that killed three people at a church dinner in June is fighting a court-ordered mental evaluation requested by prosecutors.

Michael Jennings, a pastor in Alabama who was arrested while watering his neighbors’ flowers, says he extends love to the neighbor who called the police on him. Jennings has, however, filed a federal lawsuit against the city and three of its police officers.

Worship services are set to resume Sunday [June 19] at the Alabama church where a gunman opened fire and killed three senior citizens at a potluck dinner earlier in the week.

The 70-year-old suspected gunman in a church shooting that killed three people in Alabama sat by himself drinking liquor, rejecting offers to join the others gathered at the potluck dinner, before gunfire shattered the peace of the evening, a survivor recalled.

Alabama governor Kay Ivey is calling Oakwood Adventist Academy an “inspiring example” of faith after players forfeited a tournament game rather than play on their Sabbath. Ivey is also demanding answers from state athletic officials.

Larry Flake had been running from the law for 20 years. For 10 of those years, he served as a worship pastor. He has now been arrested for a 2001 sexual assault conviction.

Alabama said it will allow a death row inmate's pastor to hold his hand during a lethal injection next month.
