The Unify Project, a national collaborative with Tony Evans to engage Southern Baptist pastors in racial reconciliation, is weeks from launching, former Southern Baptist Convention President Ed Litton announced.

Marshall Blalock, pastor of First Baptist Church, Charleston, S.C., said one of the spiritual lessons he learned through serving on the Sexual Abuse Task Force was how to “think and act with more compassion.”

Fred Luter, the lone African American to have served as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, sees great opportunity in the Unify Project, a new national grassroots racial unity initiative he’s leading with former SBC President Ed Litton and Dallas-area pastor Tony Evans.

An initiative to build racial unity nationwide, conducted by the local church, has been announced by outgoing Southern Baptist Convention President Ed Litton, former SBC president Fred Luter and noted author and pastor Tony Evans.

In his presidential address to the Southern Baptist Convention, Ed Litton called the recent revelations of sexual abuse and coverup in the denomination a “gut punch."

Willy Rice, who will accept a nomination for the SBC presidency at the 2022 annual meeting of the Convention, has released a statement regarding another potential contender for SBC president, Voddie Baucham. 

On Friday, Voddie Baucham confirmed that he had been asked to accept a nomination for SBC president. However, his eligibility remains in question as he lives overseas and is not locally connected to an SBC church.

Citing a growing desire to develop a strategy to “bridge our divides and bring about a Gospel-driven unity and reconciliation,” SBC president Ed Litton announced that he would not seek a second term as SBC president.
