A judge agreed to dismiss a nearly 3-year-old lawsuit Wednesday over a Bible displayed on a table at a New Hampshire VA hospital after the plaintiffs' lawyer proposed a separate display and sought to work with the hospital.

“They're going to have to handcuff me and take me to jail...We're not going to stop feeding. We're going to do what Christ compels us to do,” Rev. Bernie Lindley said.

It’s more important than ever to consider what freedom of speech is, the threats it faces, and why it’s still vitally important for our society. 

For a church or house of worship to truly flourish, it needs to maintain independence from government control in certain fundamental areas. There is a legal term for this idea: church autonomy.

"It would be a sincere injustice for my office to charge a person with a crime who has simply chosen to practice their faith by singing with their congregation," said San Luis Obispo county District Attorney Dan Dow.
