Technology and The Holy Spirit: The Role of AI in Global Church Strategy

Yet this narrative stands in opposition to three truths that are worth remembering and reaffirming.

  1. The Kingdom is inefficient by human standards. And we mortals run into problems when we think we can do things better than Holy Spirit can.
  2. The Holy Spirit has always been at work and will continue to be at work. Even where we cannot comprehend the threads Holy Spirit is weaving in the tapestry of the church through time, orchestration is still there.
  3. AI is never a substitute for listening to the Holy Spirit and responding in obedience.

To be clear, I am not afraid of technological tools. Rather, I caution us to remember that they are only tools, subject to the limitations of their human designers. But technology is not our savior, it will not lead us into all truth, and an algorithm is not a replacement for the more time-consuming endeavors of praying to hear from God and do what he says.

I would hope we could each agree that if we find ourselves living in a narrative where we feel more comfortable depending on the wisdom of an AI than the Spirit of God, judging that AI’s way is better than God’s inefficient and cha-ordic way, then we are not in the story of the Kingdom.
