Top 10 Things I Love That Worship Leaders Do

6. Pray for real.

I love it when worship leaders are God-conscious and pray like they’re talking to their Father.

It’s easy to lapse into “stage prayers,” full of filler or verbal tics. But when leaders pray honestly, it encourages me to bring my true self before God.

7. Prioritize the Word.

Feelings matter, but they’re not our guide. God’s Word is.

I love when worship leaders choose songs rich in truth, echoing Scripture and the full human experience.

I love when they read Scripture in transitions and begin the gathering with a call to worship rather than an icebreaker song.

The worship service doesn’t end when the music stops. The preaching of the Word is the apex.

8. Lead with serious joy.

Worship shouldn’t feel like a comedy show or a funeral.

I love leaders who balance gladness and gravity—happy in God, humbled by his holiness.

Not a game show host, not an aloof artist, but someone who understands the weight and wonder of worship.

9. Don’t try to out-preach the preacher.

I love it when leaders give theological context, pray during transitions, and equip the congregation.

But sometimes the talking goes too far—especially after the sermon. No need to re-preach the pastor’s points.

Leave the sermon to the preacher, and the songs to the worship leader.

10. Point me to the gospel.

This is why I’m there, whether I remember it or not. I need the announcement of Christ’s work—his cross and resurrection—more than I need oxygen.

I love when everything the worship leader does points to the grace of God in Jesus. Creativity should adorn the gospel, not distract from it.

Rehearse the gospel with us. It’s the greatest gift you can give.

For all those who labor faithfully in these things—including many, many friends of mine who serve their churches as worship leaders, some perhaps in the face of weekly criticism and complaints—I am eternally thankful for you. I love you.
