Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae said the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk symbolizes the spiritual warfare occurring in a divided culture. On the latest episode of “Deep End with Lecrae,” the musician said he had a vision about Kirk’s murder while in Africa. He also advised Christians to seek unity amid earthly strife.

Lecrae, who turns 46 today (Oct. 9), said he didn’t know Kirk and had never met him. “I’d only heard of [Kirk] when he falsely accused me of campaigning for [U.S. Senate candidate] Raphael Warnock,” he said. When Kirk was shot and killed Sept. 10 at a college event in Utah, Lecrae was in Africa, so he didn’t hear the news as quickly as others did.

After people criticized the musician for not speaking out about the incident, he made a statement about rejecting violence. “I’m slow to speak because I’m trying to process” the news, Lecrae said. “I’m not that narcissistic to feel like I have to have the leading voice on everything that’s going on in America.”

Lecrae Had a Vision After Charlie Kirk’s Murder

Lecrae—who’s currently on tour for his new album, “Reconstruction”—was traveling last month in Africa, where he said “supernatural occurrences” aren’t uncommon. The day after seeing video of Kirk’s assassination, Lecrae woke up with severe stomach cramps, assuming he had food poisoning. He explained:

The room turns purple, and I see Charlie Kirk being assassinated, blood, you know, coming out of his body. And I heard what, to me, was the voice of demons laughing, laughing. It was like in an instant, and then it was like the curtain closed and then the room went back to regular color…I’m not saying that because I had the dream that…Charlie was a martyr. I’m not saying…I have the full understanding of it all. I just know I had a crazy—not dream [but]—vision, because I was awake. I’ve never had this experience in my life.

The vision “freaked me out because I come from a pretty theologically conservative background,” Lecrae said, “and that type of stuff just doesn’t happen.” Reflecting on the experience, he said God was likely alerting him to the spiritual warfare occurring on earth. “I think there’s real dangers of us being so frustrated at each other that we take each other’s lives, which is satanic and demonic.”

Although followers of Jesus should be involved with social issues, Lecrae said, they can do so without destroying the other side. He pointed to examples such as William Wilberforce and the Black church during America’s civil rights era. “The kingdom of Jesus doesn’t look like the left or the right, regardless of what people may say,” Lecrae noted. “It looks like Christ.”
