After fleeing violence in their Guatemalan town, a family of 15 joined an Advent candlelight ceremony organized by their shelter just south of the border.

Faith leaders working on the border are wary of what's to come. They expect tensions will rise if new restrictions are imposed. If not, they will struggle to host ever larger numbers of arrivals.

Pastor-run shelters have partnered with educators to help, busing children to an alternative school that teaches everything from math to reading to dealing with emotions and bringing in specially accredited teachers.
