Classroom Emergency Procedures for Church and Children’s Ministry

Every emergency looks different. Stay prepared with these tips.

5 Tips for Classroom Emergency Procedures

1. Flip books are a great tool.

Put one in each classroom or wherever people gather. Tabs contain specific instructions for various scenarios. A free download is at www.kidcheck.com/flip-book. It’s a simple way for everyone to know how to respond.

2. Signage is effective and affordable.

Clearly identify items such as first-aid kits and exit routes.

3. Electronic children’s check-in/check-out is key.

During emergencies or evacuations, attendance records are vital. So keep a real-time attendee roster with you at all times. Then you can confirm headcount in designated areas outside. As parents pick up children, you can also complete check-out and update data.

4. Work with the security team and/or leadership team.

Make sure church leaders approve classroom emergency procedures and plans. When you need extra resources, designated security individuals come in handy.

5. Educate and train so everyone understands the plan.

Have a 10-minute standing meeting each week to review emergency procedures. This helps new and long-term staff members and volunteers stay updated.

Emergencies can happen any time. Being prepared is much less costly than learning through experience.
