During a recent conversation with ChurchLeaders, for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel and Luke Smallbone reflected on a defining moment in their nearly 20-year journey as a band—a moment they could only attribute to God.

On Nov. 23, the four-time Grammy Award-winning band released “FOR KING + COUNTRY: No Turning Back” on Wonder Project’s Prime Video subscription.

According to the documentary’s synopsis, fans will receive a behind-the-curtain look into Joel and Luke’s “extraordinary journey from Australia to America.” The documentary focuses on the band’s “failed starts, industry rejections, personal health struggles, and navigating the ever-changing world of music.” It includes “raw emotion and candid honesty, and is grounded by faith” as the brothers “explore the perils of ego, the strength of family, and the power of a brotherhood forged in both triumph and trial.” Viewers will watch Joel and Luke go from “mowing lawns and hauling gear to selling out arenas around the world” and witness “a story of perseverance, purpose, and the redeeming grace that made it all possible, revealing the heart behind the band like you’ve never seen before.”

Joel shared a surprising and deeply personal example of a God moment that was pivotal to them becoming a band: Luke tearing his ACL during the first football game of his junior year of high school.

Though a painful setback, Joel said the injury became a turning point for both brothers. Their father had been encouraging Luke to get involved in music during that time, but Joel admitted he struggled with insecurity and ego, believing Luke was better at “everything—sports, singing, even taller.”

The injury sidelined Luke for six months and unexpectedly reshaped the dynamics between them. Joel said that Luke’s injury “created, actually, frankly, just a lot of empathy in me.”

Joel attributed Luke’s injury as an opportunity for them to recognize how God works not only in the “sparkly, magical moments,” but also in the painful, humbling ones.

“And don’t get me wrong, [God is] there in [the great moments],” Joel continued. “I’m not saying he’s not, but he’s also with the poor in spirit, and he’s also with those that are struggling and hurting, and I would argue, almost more so if the economy of spirituality works like that.” Joel shared, “That was just a hard moment that I saw turn for good, and it was really set a course for both of our lives, you know, some ligaments in his left knee set a course for our future, which is funny to say, isn’t it?”

“FOR KING + COUNTRY: No Turning Back” is now streaming on Wonder Project on Prime Video.
