She continued to explain that she’s not surprised Martin opened their home to strangers.

“This is how Martin is. He is extremely helpful,” Irene said. “He’s got a big, big heart. And so it was definitely on display at that day.”

Martin described the event as both “horrific” and “peaceful.” He said, “People were here for bad situation, but they were all kind of taking care of each other.”

Three days after the shooting, the San Jose Police Department announced that it had a suspect in custody—a 17-year-old. The suspect was on probation at the time for running from police with a loaded gun.

Reports say that the gunman shot a rival gang member and wounded two bystanders. None of those wounded has life-threatening injuries.

After spending six hours together, the Garcias now have many new friends. They plan to stay in touch and reunite after the holidays.

Community Members React to San Jose Mall Shooting

Nearly 250,000 people have viewed the footage on social media of Martin and Irene Garcia opening their home to strangers. Thousands have reacted, mostly with applause for the kind couple.

One user quoted Mr. Rogers in her reply: “Look for the helpers.”

“Bravo to the couple!” said another. “What a beautiful moment of what a community should be!”

“Our officers have a limited ability to prevent this type of juvenile violence when our juvenile laws are so weak,” San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said. “The young offenders feel almost no fear of consequences.”

Several personal friends of the Garcias also commented that Martin and Irene are wonderful people, and their friends aren’t surprised that they chose to open their home.

“Martin Garcia has always been a good egg,” said one user. “Be like Martin.”

Another shared, “The Garcias are a wonderful family. I’m not surprised whatsoever. Blessings to the fam.”
