Persecution in Nigeria isn’t random, the letter noted, and internal security forces have been ineffective at stopping the violence. “Not enough attention has been given…to the ethnic Fulani militias who are committing mass atrocities and displacing entire communities,” the letter continued.
The group’s requests include partnering with Nigerian officials and holding them accountable, making U.S. military assistance conditional on certain benchmarks, imposing sanctions on officials involved in attacks, providing aid to displaced residents, and filling the long-vacant role of ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom at the U.S. State Department.
“A new approach is urgently needed,” the letter stated. “This ongoing brutality not only devastates families and churches but also undermines regional stability and U.S. security and humanitarian interests.”
