Christians Playing in the AFC Championship Game
Denver Broncos
Courtland Sutton
After last week’s ankle injury to Bo Nix knocked the starting quarterback out of the playoffs, the AFC’s top-seeded team was forced to make swift adjustments. Leading the way Sunday will be veteran wide receiver Courtland Sutton, an eighth-year pro out of Southern Methodist University.
At the beginning of his NFL career, Sutton said he benefited from reading devotions in “Uncommon Life” by Tony Dungy. In 2018, the wide receiver told Sports Spectrum it’s important to “carry your cross every day.” He also pointed to the importance of using his platform to share Jesus with one person at a time.
Jonah Elliss
Second-year Broncos pass rusher Jonah Elliss will face off Sunday against his brother Christian Elliss, a Patriots linebacker. Jonah, 22, and Christian, 27, belong to a family known for its faith as well as its football prowess.
Dad Luther Elliss is a former NFL player and a former team chaplain for the Broncos. “As a family, we are followers of Christ, we’re Christians, and we’re people who believe in Jesus,” said Luther. “[God’s] plan is the ultimate plan. We got to trust in that.”
Son Jonah writes in his Instagram bio, “Through the lord who strengthens me.” He has spoken about the blessings of coming from a large family, which was formed partly through adoption.
Jahdae Barron
Jahdae Barron, named the top college defensive back for 2024, was a first-round draft pick for the Broncos last spring. The University of Texas standout began his draft party with a Bible study and posted the words to Psalm 50:23.
Barron, 24, is vocal about trusting God’s plans and “relying on God.” The DB said he uses his God-given talent to proclaim the Lord’s greatness, citing Psalm 105:1 as a key life verse. “When you honor [God] and just be a light bulb for him, just be his servant,” Barron said, “it’s always good.”
