“So I’ve made peace with the imperfect beauty of being a human among humans,” said Gungor. “To be clear, I still think the Christian empire is essentially anti-christ. I still think most churches wildly misunderstand the Gospel of Christ. I still find most worship music incredibly cringy and most sermons mind numbingly boring.”

However, Gungor expressed, “Goodness, do I love singing with people. Especially people who sing a bit out of key. And goodness do I love a good old church lady hug on a Sunday morning.”

“I love the people standing around talking about their lives and drinking mediocre coffee in the lobby and the smell of the candles and the ancient nostalgia and beauty of the Eucharist and all of the little kids running rampant and uncivilized,” he continued.

“I love normal, ‘imperfect’ people. And I love God,” said Gungor. “And if I have to sometimes hide my yawns or eye rolls during a sermon while I wait for the chance to once again belt out the tenor line to ‘Be Thou My Vision’ while miss Betty holds open the hymnal for herself and me…well, it’s worth it.”

“At least for now,” he added.
