He emphasizes that his family still loves Hillsong, its team and volunteers, and “everyone who still calls this broken but beautiful church home across the globe.” As ChurchLeaders has reported, the Australia-based church has faced numerous scandals and upheavals recently.

Kimes, who served as a Hillsong pastor for 16 years, writes, “Hillsong will always hold a special place in our hearts, even with the immense pain we’ve endured.” Pastors, he adds, “are meant to be shepherds who protect the sheep, not wolves who prey on the sheep they’re entrusted to protect.”
