Pastor and Tennis Legend Margaret Court Takes Aim at Serena Williams

Race is intertwined as well. In 1970, Court made comments about South Africa that seemed to support apartheid. Williams and her older sister, Venus, are credited with opening tennis to females of color.

A Deadspin headline about the Court-Williams controversy notes: “A privileged white woman is upset that people don’t like her as much as the Black woman that changed tennis—and sports—forever. Go figure.”

Guardian writer Merlissa Lawrence Corbett takes issue with Court’s claim of being targeted for her faith: “Nobody has an issue with you being a Christian. Professional athletes profess their faith all the time,” she writes. “The issue is Court’s hostility toward anyone who does not embrace her brand of Christianity.”
