How will this season continue to highlight the stories of the women who followed Jesus?
We featured women throughout the first two seasons, but this time, I think we do women in the show a service because they start to have some of the same issues the boys do. They start bickering and there’s some jealousies and frustrations. That was something I think the actresses really enjoyed. Sometimes there’s this risk of self-correcting, of always having the women be the saints because this is such a male-heavy show. In this season, we show they have the same issues the guys do. And I think that’s actually just as honoring.
What elements of season three might especially resonate with audiences now, at the tail end of 2022?
We are in a very, very divided time. We are divided into political tribes, denominational tribes. There is a spirit of unrest and division. And you hear that in the trailer: Jesus says that division you feel in your heart, the unrest, sometimes that’s God trying to get your attention. And I think you’ll see very strongly throughout this season Jesus address the fact that even 2,000 years ago, we were facing the same denominational and political differences we do today. And there is an answer for them.
