Fans around the globe raved about Karen Abercrombie’s performance in “War Room.” The movie tells the story of a family attempting to fix its problems. As she portrayed Clara Williams in the film, audience members were drawn into the wisdom of this older woman. Now, Abercrombie is on the big screen yet again as Grandma Quill in “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.”

Abercrombie spoke to Christian Headlines about her profession. “It is a ministry to me,” she said of acting. “My gifts as well as my life [are] God-given, and so, to the best of my ability, I want to use the gifts that He’s given me in a way that would honor the Giver.” She continued, “I may be saying someone else’s words, but while I’m doing it and trying to do it in excellence, it’s a form of praise.”

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” empire includes films, TV specials, a series, and, of course, hundreds of comic books. The superhero team was first introduced in the 1969 comic book, “Marvel Super-Heroes” no. 18. As part of superhero films at their finest, the “guardians” comprise a team of intergalactic mercenaries that work together and defend the Andromeda galaxy.

In “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3,” Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) returns to Earth to visit his grandfather. And, of course, Grandma Quill is the one who greets him at the door.

Abercrombie recalled, “One of my agents reached out to me…and asked if I would be interested. And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ And then I did the audition. And we started communicating with Marvel [the studio].” She continued, “And then everything went quiet. And then I got another email—‘We’re going to start taping in Atlanta.’”

“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play Grandma Quill in the new Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3,” the star posted on Facebook.

Hundreds of friends, family, and fans have liked and reacted to Abercrombie’s post. “I had no idea that door of opportunity was ‘Yours!'” posted Gwen. “Congratulations!! Wow! The Lord just keeps on “Blessing” you and extending your borders! Much Love!!”

And, Abercrombie’s own sister, Rosemary said, “Hey sis I’m going to watch it since you’re in it.”

Abercrombie said that she believes “God is going to start taking back territory”—territory “from darkness—all of entertainment, all of the media.”

“It’s an opportunity to be what we profess to be. Even if you’re not running, grabbing people, taking them to the back and trying to save them or share the message of Christ, we can do that in how we respond,” she told Christian Headlines.
