Pope Blasts ‘Consumerist Greed’ on World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation

Francis’ final considerations were about the Catholic Church’s commitment to the protection of the environment. The Season of Creation that will be inaugurated in September ends on Oct. 4, which is scheduled to be the opening of the long-awaited Vatican Synod on Synodality.

The gathering of bishops and laypeople, which Pope Francis has recently expanded to also include women, has the goal of developing new power structures and reviving a spirit of mission within the church.

“In the same way that a river gives life to all kinds of animal and plant life, a synodal Church must give life by sowing justice and peace in every place it reaches,” Francis said, so “that our common home will teem with life once again.”
