Other people accused Root of seeking fame, trying to “target” the TV show, and “playing word games like the left.” Someone who usually agrees with Root pushed back: “I own a farm and have hired non Christians to work on my farm and have no idea what kind of politics they promote. I hope you don’t boycott my hay if you notice any of them with a woke flag or something.”
Jon Root Responds to Critics of His Approach
On May 31, Root pushed back, tweeting: “For the people that disagree with me holding @TheChosenTV accountable, How would you react if your church displayed a Pride flag for all to see & defended the display. All because they wanted to appease the cameraman who is a cross-dressing, openly married gay man?”
Root continued:
The fact of the matter is, @TheChosenTV stood by displaying a Pride flag on the set of a show that is supposed to be about honoring God, His Word and the story of our Lord & Savior, His Son, Jesus Christ. That flag represents the celebration of sexual depravity, a redefinition of God’s design for marriage, transgenderism & irreversible body mutilation on vulnerable minors. It should never be supported by Christ followers. They don’t get a free pass because they’re the “most watched Christian show of all time.”
Does Hillsong & Brian Houston get a pass because their music and sermons have been heard by millions? Does Joel Osteen’s prosperity gospel get a pass because he’s been heard by millions & sold millions of books? The Chosen should be held to a high, Biblical standard. This decision is unacceptable & ungodly. Quite frankly, based off this decision, they look more like the world than the Kingdom of Heaven right now.
Evangelicals ‘Harassing Their Own’
After the Daily Wire published an article about the controversy, co-CEO Jeremy Boreing tweeted, “This is a disgusting piece, and I’m sorry we ran it.”
He added, “A show like The Chosen has 100+ employees. One of them brought a pride flag to work. That sucks, but it’s hardly the fault of the show. The producer’s response also sucks, but it isn’t untrue. There is no ‘you don’t have to hire gay people if you don’t agree with homosexuality’ allowance in US labor law.”
“On the whole, this piece reeks of ‘purity death spiral’ politics. Unless you are perfect – as defined by the ever-and-rapidly-changing sensibilities of the moment, you aren’t even good,” said Boreing. “That way lies madness. Hold people and organizations accountable, yes. Hold them to impossible standards and require death for their sins? I think actual Jesus had something to say about that.”
