On Tuesday (Oct. 3), Franklin Graham, who is the son of famed evangelist Billy Graham and an influential evangelical leader in his own right, took to social media to call upon Christians to pray for Trump.

“It’s unbelievable the way the New York State’s attorney general Letitia James and the judge with his gleeful smirks have treated [Donald Trump]. It is absolutely shameful,” Graham wrote

“I would encourage everyone to pray for our former president—He needs our prayers. This coming election is going to be so important,” Graham continued. “We are on the cusp of losing our nation and the freedoms we have been able to enjoy.”

The idea that Christians will lose their “freedoms” if President Biden wins a second term has been a common refrain for Graham, who has often implied a looming existential threat without delving into the specifics of how religious liberty has been or might be lost during the Biden administration. 

For his part, Trump continues to make headlines with his freewheeling remarks outside the courtroom where his civil trial is being held. On Wednesday (Oct. 4), Trump mulled the idea of taking over as Speaker of the House following the ousting of California Republican Kevin McCarthy. 

“A lot of people have been calling me about Speaker,” Trump told reporters. “All I can say is we’ll do whatever’s best for the country and for the Republican Party.”

When pressed about whether he would consider taking the role, Trump said that he is “totally focused” on his presidential campaign, adding, “If I can help them during the process, I would do it.”
