Njoku is no stranger to football-related injuries and discouragement, and he credits God with healing him both physically and mentally. Back in 2019, the tight end figured he’d have to retire soon because leg pain had become so severe. While giving a testimony last year, Njoku told a youth gathering that after a pastor anointed his legs with holy oil, the pain soon disappeared.
Because of his Nigerian heritage, Njoku is nicknamed “Chief.” Last year he received an honorary chieftain title during a ceremony to recognize his humanitarian work. Since becoming a Cleveland Brown, the first-generation American has traveled to Nigeria regularly to donate food, water, and other necessities. He also funded the construction of a borehole for fresh-water access in his ancestral village.
“God is the greatest,” Njoku wrote in an Instagram post about the ceremony. “What an Honor it is to be inaugurated as a Chief. More importantly, what an honor it is to give back to your people. I am nothing. God I give you all the glory!!!”
