According to Carranza, she had reported her daughter-in-law to child-protective services more than 20 times, with no results. “Her brain was broken,” Carranza wrote, adding that the suspect had made threats and even kept an unlocked gun in Samuel’s diaper bag at one point.

Carranza, who is Jewish, wrote, “My faith tradition demands of me compassion, and I have it for my deceased daughter-in-law.” The suspect reportedly had a Palestine sticker on her rifle, but Carranza said it’s “reckless and irresponsible” to jump to conclusions about any motive. The suspect’s gender identity also has led to speculation and misinformation.
