After Iowa state Rep. Jon Dunwell, who is also a pastor, defended the Satanic Temple’s religious freedom, the politician was accused of being a heretic. In an interview with ChurchLeaders last December, Dunwell said:

When government comes in and begins to be the arbitrator of what is an appropriate religious expression and what’s not an appropriate religious expression, that scares the Dickens out of me. That means we’re giving up freedom, and someday it’s gonna be used against us.

Dunwell added, “I don’t want government picking and choosing religious expression. I want freedom.”
