Throckmorton continued, “Rarely is this story perverted so much as Ben Carson did here.” The professor shared a link to his website, which features minutes from the Constitutional Convention on June 28, 1787.

“Rarely did anyone reference religion in the formation of the Constitution,” Throckmorton wrote. “In fact, just days later on July 2, delegate Gouverneur Morris, as if to answer Franklin’s motion for assistance from heaven, said to the Convention: ‘Reason tells us we are but men; and we are not to expect any particular interference of Heaven in our favor.’”

In a 2021 Pew Research Center survey, 18% of Americans agreed that the “U.S. Constitution was inspired by God, reflects God’s vision for America.” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that America’s Constitution was divinely inspired.
