Jacobo Lopez, Lopez’s uncle, told WFAA News that his nephew was so excited for his baptism that he had trouble sleeping the night before. Jacobo called his nephew a “hero” for not hesitating to rescue his friend Delgado.
“He didn’t think twice about rescuing someone else. He didn’t think about the risk that he could die. And he did risk his life to save somebody else’s,” he said.
Lopez’s rescue of Delgado took place just an hour after his baptism.
A GoFundMe has been set up for the Lopez family to raise $50,000 to transport his body back to his hometown of Chiapas, Mexico. Lopez is survived by his parents and six siblings.
