Succession plans are rarely linear and often have multiple possibilities regarding the timeline and specific steps. While the Falcons named Penix as the starting quarterback in the middle of the 2024 season, decisions have not yet been made about Cousins’ future with the team.
Fans suspect that Cousins isn’t worried about next steps. Throughout his career—with multiple teams and injuries—Cousins has “surrendered to Jesus” and let him lead. He takes it “one day at a time.”
“I’ve just kind of been reminded again that my career, it’s not my career. It’s [God’s] career that I steward, and I’ve just gotta surrender myself and let Him lead where He wants to go,” Cousins said after surgery in 2023. “And when that’s a torn Achilles, I have to accept it just as much as if it’s a win on ‘Monday Night Football.’”
