Tim Allen Navigates Being Politically Conservative in Hollywood
Allen has described himself as “fiscally conservative and emotionally liberal.” While he attended President Trump’s first inauguration, Allen has since quieted politically after he spoke against the U.S. Capitol rioters in 2021.
For a total of nine seasons, “Last Man Standing” portrayed the life of Mike Baxter (Tim Allen), a husband and father to three girls and marketing director for a sporting goods store chain. The sitcom contained conservative views while making viewers laugh at Baxter’s antics.
In 2017, Allen was “almost afraid” to admit he attended President Trump’s first inauguration and compared being a conservative in Hollywood to living in 1930s Germany while a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
“You gotta be real careful around here, you know,” Allen said to Kimmel. “You’ll get beat up if you don’t believe what everybody believes.”
Many suspect that the controversial comment led to ABC canceling “Last Man Standing,” though ABC cited “studio ownership, future creative direction, ratings, and viewer engagement” as factors. The show was later picked up by FOX for another couple of seasons.
In January 2025, Allen was again a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” this time to speak of his experience amid the L.A. fires. He and his family navigated packing up and escaped. Allen compared the experience to an earthquake he and his family barely survived when he was growing up.
Allen also promoted his new ABC show, “Shifting Gears.” Allen plays a widower who restores cars for a living. “I want to be a widower. I want to deal with grief,” Allen continued. “I always was amazed at people that deal with grief.”
