During the waiting process, Alondra Gutierrez pledged to provide for her family and to assist with her dad’s business. “We need to cling on to the hope that he who is just and righteous will have an opportunity for due process,” she said. “We believe in the miracle of him being able to stay here.”

Following President Trump’s second inauguration, the number of immigration arrests has spiked throughout the United States. ICE agents are now allowed to conduct raids in churches, schools, and hospitals.

Texas, with 21 detention facilities, is the epicenter of immigrant detention. Because immigration charges are civil offenses, detainees lack the constitutional protections granted to people arrested for criminal offenses.
